Family, Fun, Food, and Fireworks!

Monday, June 14, 2010

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.  You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."  ~Erma Bombeck

What says summer more than spending time with family and celebrating those things which we value most. Here are some ideas to help you plan fun events and create lasting memories!

First we have a 4th of July Invitation!

INSTRUCTIONS:
Print invitation on cardstock, trim to size and mat on cardstock. Die-cut Sandal from patterned papers, layer and adhere to invitation. Die-cut Stars out of cardstock, embellish with glitter and adhere to Sandals using foam dots. Embellish with ribbon.

And what about decorations? Every good party needs some fun decorations to spice things up. How about a cute centerpiece for your tables?

INSTUCTIONS:
Die-cut Stars out of acrylic and paper-covered chipboard. Embellish acrylic with paint pens. Die-cut Rectangle from chipboard. Use texture plate to emboss white-core colored cardstock and sand to highlight. Attach to rectangular chipboard. Punch two holes in rectangle. Punch holes into Star points, matching up to holes in rectangle. Punch one hole into smaller Stars. Use Textured Impressions folders to emboss paper. Die-cut Stars from paper and distress with distressing ink. Attach Stars and photos to pages. Die-cut the word “July” from paper and attach to album. Embellish with sayings, buttons and brads. Use binder rings to attach Stars to rectangular chipboard. Tie ribbons onto rings. Hand-cut flame from paper. Attach to a small strip of acrylic. Glue acrylic strip to back side of album. Ruffle tissue paper and adhere to back side of flame. Embellish flame and ruffle with distressing ink and glitter glue.

Or how about a Hero Sign to remember those who served, are serving, or are yet to serve in the defense of those things we treasure?
"All gave some, some gave all." ~Howard Osterkamp of Dent, commander of Chapter 3620 and a Korean War veteran.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Adhere various papers to cardstock. Die-cut Album Pages from cardstock and embellish with buttons, pieces of printed paper and distressing ink. Apply stitching to edges if desired. Die-cut Stars and sentiment from paper-covered chipboard and apply distressing ink. Add pen details and glitter. Adhere to Album pages. Die-cut the word “our” out of colored cardstock and adhere to page. Attach all pages to a strip of chipboard. Punch holes in ends and tie on ribbon.

Here's a neat idea: A decorative pillow!  Did you know that your Sizzix tools can cut fabric as well as cardstock and paper?

INSTRUCTIONS:
Cut strips of fabric for stripes. Stitch together with seams always facing up. Attach square to side of stripes in the same manner. Cut a piece of fabric the same size as the front. Stitch three sides together with seams still facing outward. Wash and dry pillow cover to create the chenille look. Insert batting into pillow and machine stitch closed. Die-cut two Stars from fabric and one from batting. Assemble batting between two Stars and stitch around edges. Sew button into center of Star. Attach to pillow with hot glue or by sewing.

Note: A store-bought pillow can work as well. Just create Stars and attach to pillow as instructed above.

Aren't you just so excited for the holidays? Family, fun, food, and best of all, the fireworks! We're looking forward to it :)

What about you? What are your plans for crafting this 4th of July? Leave us a comment and let us know what you're planning!

Love Is A Work Of Heart

Friday, June 11, 2010

As this week is coming to a close, we wish to send you off with two more projects from Lindsey.

The first is a Wedding Layout using the Basic Grey Cappella Collection Pack!

Check out the Roses Flourish embellishment from Prima! They are so simple, but give your project just a little bit of elegance to be set above the rest! Not to mention they work very well with the Cappella Collection Pack.

And what do you think of this Embellished Butterfly from Jenni Bowlin?  Did you know that this particular embellishment comes in six different colors?

Here's a good look at all the different elements together. Didn't Lindsey do an amazing job at creating visual interest?  She knows just how to use many different pieces and objects to make one fantastic layout!

Now we know you want to know how to make this beautiful layout because so do we!  So to curve your curiousity, here are the instructions.

Supplies:

Basic Grey: Cappella Paper Pack
Basic Grey: Cappella Ribbon Doilies (Blue)
Jenni Bowlin: Embellished Butterflies (Brown)
Brown Marker / Pen
Circuit Cartridge: Songbird
     >s< Frame Size 10”
Tim Holtz Distress Inks:
     - Bundled Sage
     - Spun Sugar
     - Pumice Stone
Prima: Say It In Pearls - Roses Flourish (Cream)

Technique Tip: Many avoid layering the same colored and patterned papers for fear that the papers will blend into each other. However, if you outline and layer in such a way that the patterns are clearly visible, it comes out looking very put together and organized. For example, in this project the “Our Day" sticker looks as if it would blend into the paper behind, but when you outline it and give it a slight tilt, you break up the pattern around it and create more visual interest.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Take whichever paper you wish to use as your background for the page, and ink the entire page using the Pumice Stone Distress Ink. Next, take your second page and using your Songbird Cricut Cartridge, cut out your frame (>s< Frame Size 10”). After the frame is cut out, cut it in half. Using your Bundled Sage Distress Ink, ink all the edges of the frame. Glue the frame down on the middle of the background page, but tilt it slightly to the left. With your other Cappella paper, cut out a 10 ½" x 6" piece and ink it with the Spun Sugar Distress Ink. Glue this piece on the bottom half of your page so that it covers the last ½" of the frame.

Step 2: Cut a strip of the Cappella paper ½" wide and 11" in length. Glue it down on an angle across the 10 ½" x 6" rectangle. Along the top of the strip you just attached, glue the Cappella Doily. Finally, choose a sticker edge from the Cappella sticker sheet and place it along the bottom of the rectangle.

Step 3: How to create your picture mat: Take your Brown Vine Sheet and cut it 5"x5". Glue this piece down on the right side of the frame. Take your Sticker Lace 12"x12 strip (can be found in the Cappella Paper Pack) and cut off a 5" long piece. Stick this piece along the left side of the picture mat.

Step 4: On the Cappella Sticker Sheet, find and remove the “Our Day” Journal Sticker and place it in the bottom left corner of your page over the doilies. Using your brown font pen outline the edge of the "Our Day" sticker. Lastly, take the large brown flower from the Cappella Sticker Sheet and place it just over the bottom left corner of the “Our Day” sticker.

Step 5: Take your Say It In Pearls Roses Flourish embellishment and stick it on the left side of your page just above the "Our Day" sticker. Next, take a medium flower from the Cappella Sticker Sheet and stick it just below the pearls. Place two more flower stickers, one at the top of the pearl strand, and one at the bottom left corner of the picture mat. Finally, off to the side of the pearl strand place the “The wedding" sticker from the Cappella Sticker Sheet.

Step 6: At the top right corner of the picture mat place one more flower from the Cappella Sticker Sheet as well as a Jenni Bowlin Embellished Butterfly. Along the right side of the page, just below the butterfly, spell out “LOVE” using the letters found in the Cappella Sticker Sheet (the bottom of each letter should touch the edge of the page).

Now this second project from Lindsey is a lovely decoration piece.

Lindsey used the Cappella Collection Pack as well as tons of embellishments to create this cute little display book.

The Betania Bling it On from Basic Grey adds some great darker contrast. Not to mention is helps with the delicate nature of the whole.

We think the finished product is just fantastic. Lindsey really knows her stuff!  And we want to let you have a chance to ask her for advice so we're going to have another Q&A with Lindsey on Tuesday, June 15th!  Join us on our Facebook page at 12:00PM MST to ask Lindsey any questions you might have. And don't forget, though we may be featuring Lindsey's wedding projects this week, you are welcome to look back through her projects and ask about any of her previous work as well! You can also email Lindsey at lindseyfillmore @ yahoo . com.

Have an absolutely splendid weekend and we'll see you next week!
Happy scrapping!

To Have And To Hold

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Who doesn't love a wedding? The happy smiling couple and all their friends and family around to share in their joy.  Is there anything better than seeing two young people starting their lives together?

Lindsey has been working hard in our Design Room coming up with some simply adorable wedding ideas and we'd like to show off her talent (and we've included the instructions just to be extra nice :) ).

For instance, we have this darling Bride Box.

Lindsey used the Tim Holtz Shabby Vintage Paper Stack and the Sizzix Bigz Pro Die : Box, Match by E.L. Smith to create this adorable box.

Coming soon to OMC is this super versatile Chipboad Scallop Circle from Technique Tuesday!

Lindsey used the D'vine Swirls Cuttlebug Embossing Folder to create this fun texture on the box. We think it gives it that extra bit of elegant flair every wedding needs!

Supplies:

My Mind’s Eye: Lush Blue Floral Sheet
Cuttlebug A2 Embossing Folder: D’vine Swirl
Tim Holtz Distress Inks: Pumice Stone

Tsukineko: Fantastix Pen Tool

Technique Tuesday: Chipboard Scallop Circle (Coming Soon to OMC!)
3” wide Aqua Blue Tulle (any brand)
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist:
      - Green Tea
      - Blue Skies
Basic Grey: Nook and Pantry Alphabet Stickers

Sizzix Bigz Pro Die: Box, Match by E.L. Smith

Cuttlebug Machine

Technique Tip: When using multiple Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists to create your desired color combination, spray the first color and dab the extra off with a paper towel. Next, spray your second color and dab the extra off. Repeat until you get you desired color. (Make sure you swirl your Glimmer Mist bottles instead of shake. This will prevent clogging and globs of mist on your projects.)

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Take you My Mind’s Eye Lush paper and cut it out with Sizzix Bigz Pro Die. Next, by following the directions that come with the die, assemble the box.

Step 2: Using your Fantastix tool and your Pumice Stone Distress Ink, dab a little of the ink onto the swab end of the tool. Next, ink parts of the D’vine Swirl Embossing Folder (don’t worry the ink will come off). Finally, fold the box flat so that it will fit in your embossing folder. Emboss the box by putting the embossing folder through your Cuttlebug machine.

Step 3: Take the Technique Tuesday Chipboard and mist it using the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists (see technique tip). Let your box dry for about 5 minutes.

Step 4: Once the chipboard is dry, take your Nook and Panty Alphabet Stickers and spell out “bride”.

Step 5: With your blue tulle (for this project, Lindsey used Bazzill Basics 3” Tulle), cut a piece 11 inches long and tightly tie it around the top section of the box.  Place the chipboard under the knot of the tulle. Your knot should be tight enough that it will hold the chipboard in place.

Up next we have a cute card for the happy couple! Mr. and Mrs. officially, this card is perfect to say congrats!

Isn't the Ampersand Bling from Basic Grey just ever so delicate and pretty? And check out that homemade flower. Too cute!

Supplies:

Basic Grey: Basic Kraft Paper Pack
     - Paper Line Up Sheet
Tim Holtz Distress Inks: Pumice Stone
Basic Grey: Cappella Ribbon Doilies
Basic Grey: Cappella Stitched Brads

Basic Grey: Rhinestones - Ampersand (Diamond)

Tim Holtz: Advantus Paper Stacks - Shabby Vintage

FISKARS: Border & Corner Punch-Read Between
3” wide Aqua Blue Tulle (any brand)
Bazzill Basics: 12”x12” Cardstock
-        Vanilla
-        Bon Bon
Circuit: Tie the Knot Cartridge
     -     “Mr. and Mrs.” size 2 ½
Quickie Glue pen

Technique Tip:  When creating homemade flowers, be sure to be as creative as you’d like! The more texture you create, the more interest you’ll gather.  For the flower in this project, cut circles out as big as you want, but make sure that the first circle is the biggest as it will be the bottom part of the flower. Once the circles are cut, tear the edges and crumble the circles to give them texture.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Cut out the 12”x5” base of the card using the Basic Kraft Paper Line Up sheet. Ink the edges of the card with the Pumice Stone Distress Ink. Fold the paper in half to create a 6”x5” card.

Step 2: Within the Shabby Vintage Paper Stack, find a blue floral page and cut out a 6”x3” piece.  Using your Fiskars Border & Corner Punch, punch one of the 6” sides of the paper. Use your Distress Ink again and ink the sides.

Step 3: Cut a 6” strip of the Blue Cappella Doily and glue it to the other 6” side of the Lost & Found piece of paper opposite of the side you punched.  Glue the 6”x3” piece of paper to the bottom of your card. The doily should be in the middle of your card.

Step 4: Using your Tie the Knot Cartridge, take your Bon Bon cardstock and cut out “Mr.” and “Mrs.” in size 2 ½. With your Quickie Glue Pen glue down “Mr.” above the doily and “Mrs.” underneath it. In the space between the Mr. and the Mrs. attach the Basic Grey Ampersand Bling.

Step 5:  To create your flower, cut out 3 circles from another blue floral page within the Shabby Vintage Paper Stack. The size of the flower will depend on how big you make the three circles. You will want one large circle and two smaller circles. For this project Lindsey cut out three circles: 1 ½”, 1”, and ¾”. Once the circles are cut, tear the edges and crumble the circles to give them texture. With your aqua tulle, cut out a circle about 1 ¾”. Place it between the 1 ½” and 1” circles. Next, place the ¾” circle on top of the 1” circle.  Once all the layers are placed, take the brown Cappella Stitched Brad and stick it through all of the layers.

Step 6: Attach the flower to the left side of the Ampersand Bling on top of the doily.

How about another card for the happy couple?  There are just too many great wedding card ideas out there!

OMC loves the Cappella Ribbon Doilies from Basic Grey!  Self-adhesive and simplistic in nature, these ribbons make perfect borders!

Supplies:

Basic Grey: Basic Kraft Paper Pack
      - Paper Line Up Sheet
Tim Holtz Distress Inks: Pumice Stone
Basic Grey: Cappella Ribbon Doilies
Basic Grey: Cappella Stitched Brads
Quickie Glue Pen
3” wide Aqua Blue Tulle (any brand)
Bazzill Basics: 12”x12” Cardstock - Vanilla
Prima Flowers: Lime Green Calcutta Petals
Brown font marker (any brand)

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Cut out the 12”x5” base of the card using the Basic Kraft Paper Line Up sheet. Ink the edges of the card with the Pumice Stone Distress Ink. Fold the paper in half to create a 6”x5” card.

Step 2: Within the Shabby Vintage Paper Stack, find a blue floral page and cut out a 2”x5” piece.  Use your Distress Ink again and ink the sides.

Step 3: Cut a 5” strip of the blue Cappella doily and glue it to the top of your Shabby Vintage piece of paper to create a decorative edge. Glue the 2”x5” piece of paper to the bottom of your card. The doily should be in the middle of your card.

Step 4: To create your flower, cut out 2 circles from another blue floral page within the Shabby Vintage Paper Stack. You will also need a small Calcutta Petal about ¾”, that is mostly white in color. The size of the flower will depend on how big you make the two paper circles. You will want one large circle and one smaller circle. For this project Lindsey cut out two circles: 1 ½” and 1”. Once the circles are cut, tear the edges and crumble the circles to give them texture. With your aqua tulle, cut out a circle about 1 ¾”. Place it between the 1 ½” and 1” circles. Next, place the ¾” Calcutta petal on top of the 1” circle.  Once all the layers are placed, take a cream or white Cappella Stitched Brad and stick it through all of the layers.

Step 5: Take your brown font pen and write “our blessing” above the doily. You can write other sayings as well such as: happy couple, congrats, husband and wife, or just wedding.

Don't worry, we aren't done yet! We have some more fabulous ideas for you, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow for the rest of our project ideas.

Happy Wednesday!
